Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the area of the rectum or the anus. Haemorrhoids may be internal or external and can cause a great deal of discomfort, pain or bleeding. If you are experiencing haemorrhoids for the first time, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor or pharmacist to rule out any other problems and find the most appropriate treatment for your situation. It can be embarrassing to talk about problems like haemorrhoids, but remember that healthcare professionals have seen it all before and will always be professional and understanding.

Haemorrhoids are very common and often appear during pregnancy. They can also develop after straining during bowel movements, obesity and as a result of a sedentary lifestyle. If you have haemorrhoids, you may notice rectal bleeding, which is usually bright red and seen after a bowel movement, or itching or pain in the rectal area. You may be able to see or feel swollen blood vessels around the anus, or if the problem is internal, you may simply feel pain or discomfort during bowel movements.
Anusol is a very effective treatment for piles, available in ointment or suppository form. This is a topical solution to the problem and can be bought over the counter to reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms. However, there are also many effective home remedies for piles, including warm baths containing Epsom salts and witch hazel pads, which can be applied topically. In cases of persistent piles, medical treatment may be offered, including injection, ligation and even surgery in the most extreme cases. Don’t put off speaking with a healthcare professional about your situation as it is easier to resolve and prevent piles in the early stages rather than waiting until they become more severe.
Lifestyle changes can help you to combat the cause of piles and avoid the problem in the future. Your diet will make a big difference to your health in many ways, and a diet that is high in fibre is recommended for those who experience piles. Increasing the fibre in your diet by adding more fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help to soften stools and make bowel movements more comfortable. Fibre supplements may be recommended, and you should ensure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day as hydration can help to prevent constipation and reduce the risk of haemorrhoids developing. Regular exercise is also a key factor in keeping piles at bay, and you should ensure that you are getting a good amount of cardio and weight-bearing exercise in your daily life.
