Decongestant medication is commonly used to relieve nasal congestion and blocked sinuses, and can be a game changer during the winter months! Nasal congestion can be caused by colds, allergies and sinus infections, and is most common during the cold and flu season. Decongestants are formulated to narrow the blood vessels in the nasal passages, relieve swelling and reduce congestion.

There are two main types of decongestants that you might wish to try if you are feeling blocked up and would like to breathe more easily. Oral decongestants are usually in tablet or liquid form and are taken by mouth, usually containing phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine. Alternatively, topical decongestants are delivered in spray or drop form and are applied to the nasal passages directly. These usually contain oxymetazoline and phenylephrine and can only be used for around 3-4 days.
Here at Gray’s Pharmacy, we have a selection of decongestant medications, including tablets, syrups, sprays and drops. Our experienced Pharmacists can discuss the options with you and ensure that you find the product that best fits your symptoms. Medications such as Sudafed are formulated to provide fast-acting relief when you are congested and we have options that will encourage restful sleep as well as non-drowsy options.
It is very important to read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication carefully since dosage will vary according to age and weight and you should be aware of any potential side effects. Decongestants are intended for short-term use and you should seek medical advice if congestion persists. Common side effects may include increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure and insomnia, and medications may cause complications if used in conjunction with other medicines so be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist so that they can advise you correctly.
If you are looking for medication for a child, it is crucial to speak with your doctor or pharmacist and discuss your child’s symptoms. If your child is feeling congested but you do not want to give them medication, you may wish to try gentle steaming or use a cleansing essential oil in a warm shower. It may also help to avoid dairy products, which can contribute to a build-up of mucus, and to encourage hydration by drinking more water to remove toxins and reduce dryness and congestion.
