Toothache can be very painful and persistent toothache may indicate underlying health conditions. If you have a toothache, you should make an appointment to see a dentist as soon as possible. While you are waiting, there are several effective home remedies you can try, to relieve the pain and inflammation. If you are experiencing severe pain, clove oil is a popular remedy that contains eugenol, a natural analgesic that can soothe the area and relieve pain. Clove oil can be used on a cotton wool ball, gently dabbing the affected tooth or gums.
Rinsing with salt water can be an effective way to cleanse your mouth, especially the area that is sore or infected. Simply mix a teaspoonful of salt into a glass of warm water and use it to rinse your mouth before spitting it out. You may also find it helpful to apply a cold compress, such as ice cubes wrapped in a cloth, to the outside of your cheek, against the painful area. This can help to reduce swelling and numb the area when held in place for 15-20 minutes.
Over-the-counter pain relief can be very effective in managing the pain of toothache while you are waiting to see a doctor, and you may find that a liquid or gel is the best solution for you. Painkillers containing paracetamol or ibuprofen can reduce pain and ease inflammation, and you can ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice. Ensure that you follow the packaging instructions carefully to make sure you are using the correct dosage of any medication at the correct frequency, and so that you are aware of any potential side effects.
While you wait to see your dentist, you should avoid chewing with the affected tooth or teeth and avoid any trigger foods. Brush and floss your teeth gently to remove any debris or food particles that could aggravate the area and rinse your mouth with water or saltwater after eating to keep the mouth clean.
