Topical anaesthetics are medications that are applied to the skin to temporarily numb the area and reduce sensation. These are often used for pain relief during medical procedures or to help manage the pain of an acute condition such as toothache. Topical anaesthetics such as Lidocaine or Benzocaine work to block the nerve signals when applied, preventing the sensation of pain in the treated area. Both of these are widely used in over-the-counter and prescription creams, sprays, ointments, gels and patches, and can be used to numb the skin before minor procedures, injections or minor burns, cuts or insect bites.

Some over-the-counter topical anaesthetics are only available on prescription and this includes stronger medications that can provide topical anaesthesia for longer periods. These are often used in minor surgeries and for suturing wounds. These products are designed to be used under medical supervision and are usually used in hospital settings.

Pain in the mouth can be unbearable, and it is very difficult to ignore! When you are struggling with toothache, sore or inflamed gums or mouth ulcers, you will want to find a reliable solution to relieve the pain and soothe the discomfort you are feeling. Anbesol is an excellent topical anaesthetic which can be used on the soft tissues of the mouth to stop painful sensations and relieve the pain of mouth ulcers and sore gums. It is available over the counter and is suitable for use by those over ten years old.

When you are using topical anaesthetics, it is important to read the packaging instructions carefully and to use as directed. This is especially important if you are using them for children. Topical anaesthetics can be effective at providing pain relief but can also cause side effects or occasional adverse reactions, including skin irritation or allergic reactions. You should discuss your medical history and any concerns you have with your doctor or pharmacist whenever you use medications.
