When you are unwell, it is very important to drink plenty of water to replace the fluids you are losing. It can be a good idea to use oral rehydration solutions, which contain a balance of water, salts and sugars to help restore the electrolyte balance in the body. Dioralyte powders are an excellent way to rehydrate yourself fast and come in a variety of flavoured powders that are easy to dissolve in water. Rehydrating your body gradually is usually the best option, sipping your water or rehydration solution rather than drinking large quantities at once.
Sports drinks may be useful when you are mildly dehydrated, especially after exercising, and these can help to balance the electrolytes in your body. However, these drinks often contain a lot of sugar, so you should take care to check the ingredients and drink only in moderation. Coconut water can be a good alternative option that contains potassium and is naturally low in calories, making it an excellent choice for rehydration.
If you can eat, perhaps if you are recovering from a flu-type illness, you will find that options such as broths and soups can help to rehydrate the body. If you can tolerate them, water-rich fruits and vegetables such as cucumber, oranges or watermelon, can help with rehydration and provide essential vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system and help you to heal. You should avoid caffeine and alcohol when you are unwell, as these can have a diuretic effect on the body and increase fluid loss.
In severe cases of dehydration, particularly if you notice that you are feeling dizzy or have a rapid heartbeat or extreme thirst, you should seek medical advice. If dehydration is a result of heatstroke, you may need to have your electrolyte levels monitored and may even require intravenous fluids to rehydrate your body. Dehydration can be fast and dangerous for young children and babies, and if you are concerned about a child or baby who is dehydrated, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible so that appropriate treatment may be given.
